That Part About Reducing Waste.

Our main intention to start working and developing the coaster set was actually to fully utilise the materials that we already have. Just like any other sewing or crafting projects, there are always scraps or leftovers. Many of these pieces are too pretty to be thrown away, but yet too small to be made into regular work.

Some time last year when Wah and I had a conversation on how we can reduce or minimise waste in our working process, we jotted down several ideas, including this Valentine’s Day card, mini library card, and of course the coaster set. Some of the ideas still need more thought and work, while others are being turned into real work one at a time.

As for the coaster sets, after much arguments, we settled by using the canvas scraps for the extra moisture. These canvas scraps were ‘produced’ when we worked on the cases for MacBook and MacBook Pro.

The canvas scraps are being cut into small pieces and sewn together before being placed in between the banner pieces, to be sewn into a coaster. Yes it’s more work compared to buying new and ready-to-be-sewn materials. But we believe it’s essential for small business like ours to minimise waste, in any way possible.

New!

It’s been a while since we last added new product in the line. We’ve been working on a lot of ideas from family, friends, and customers. Some are still in progress, some are stuck somewhere and left aside so we could rethink the whole idea, some are just sketches, yet to be worked on. It’s amazing to see so many different ideas from everyone! :)

And then we finally have a new coaster set in the shop. This coaster set has a really LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNG history. Wah has had the idea of doing it and actually did come out with a few prototypes since few months ago (erm, can I say it was last year?). But I didn’t like the materials that he suggested. We debated – well, we argued – several times and decided to put them aside for a while. And that was last year. Time flies!

And then we picked it up and worked on it again. This time, after plenty of arguments (still!), we finally settled with something that both of us are happy about. Structure, material, everything – well except when I was trying to shoot some photos he came and commented again. Never mind, this is just one tiny little part compared to our previous arguments. Teehee!

Introducing the new Recycled Billboard Banner Tic-Tac-Toe coaster. So tell me, when was the last time your mother told you not to play with your food? ;)

We’ll be slowly including them in our Etsy shop. One set is already up, more to come! :)
