Pet Project: huey&wah @ Etsy

I was just tweeting earlier this morning that I wanted to take some rest today because I couldn’t feel my brain. Two hours later, I went all excited about the idea of cutting that piece of banner someone passed to us several days ago, and two upcoming collaboration work.
Feel free to tell anyone that you know a crazy workaholic on the internet.
P/S: And this hand-stamp thingy, urgh! I can’t get enough of it! We recently customised a Word Find t-shirt as a birthday present for the husband of a customer, and I’m totally, I mean, TOTALLY in love with her idea. I don’t want to post about it yet as the birthday is still a few weeks from now. But she got me really excited about all the possibilities! And honestly, I’m pretty proud of myself for carving this set of alphabets!

I have recently gone back to this local post office near my place for all our shipping needs. I used to frequent this post office but there was an officer that I wasn’t really comfortable dealing with. I resolved by going to another one several months ago and I loved the officers there. The only problem is that it’s located at one of the busier areas of town and the place is always packed, with cars.
I went back to this post office several weeks ago, and was surprised to be greeted by new officers. And ever since the day I went back, I’ve been paying attention to the place, more than I should. It’s a two-storey bungalow, on a land big enough with even chickens wandering around looking for food. I mean, chickens. REAL CHICKENS.
Now if only this place can be our studio/workshop, I’ll have the ground floor renovated as our primary working area, with sewing area and banner cutting area. Upstairs, of course, will be rooms and living area, and perhaps a brainstorming room. Oh and did I mention that they have sort of a separate building at the back, which can really turn into a very neat kitchen or cafe, and a storeroom big enough to store all our banners, and perhaps a study room or something? And the yard. Oh my. The dogs will be extremely happy running around with the chickens, and I can probably even start my dream of fostering dogs and cats that are waiting for adoption. Urgh! Imagine how many new friends the dogs will have!
Yeah. If only.
While I keep on dreaming, please drop by here and vote for us. This will really make us one step closer to my dream studio/workshop. :)

On our first anniversary on Etsy (17 April 2009), we sold a tee to a wonderful customer from Canada. I honestly have to admit that I haven’t been able to work on promoting our shop for the past 2 weeks, not to mention updating the shop. I have been so tied up at work that for the past 2 weeks, my typical day was: woke up at 8:00am, feed the dog and check the garden until 9:00am, check emails until 9:30am, breakfast until 10:15am, work in front of the computer until 12:30pm, lunch, work again until 3-4pm, check out my niece until 4:30pm, take a nap until 5pm, work again until 5:30pm, watch news on TV until 6pm, work in the garden and bring the dog out until 7:30pm, bake muffins and dinner at the same time until 8:30pm, work again until 11:30pm.
This explains why I couldn’t have time for our Etsy shop, which is, really sad.
I had a whole pack of supplies shipped to me about 3 weeks ago and they are still lying on my table. I have all my thoughts and ideas sketched down in my journal and they are still the same, no development.
So it really made my day when I woke up early in the morning and received notification from Etsy on the transaction. I immediately decided to include a little gift to thank her for reminding me that it’s our first anniversary on Etsy and I should really work harder or figure out a way that will work for me.
If you are reading, Kitt, thank you so much! :)
Those of you who know me should know that I’ve been on freelance basis for… as long as I can remember. :D While I started my little business project with darl last year on crafty stuffs, I still work a little bit of freelance on selected graphical and packaging work – selected, because I only select the project and people/company that I feel comfortable to work with. Nothing personal over here, it’s just because I feel that every client and personnel has different tastes and expectations, there are times that I just can’t blend in with what they are expecting, and I don’t wanna waste our time and effort on it.
Somehow, along my freelance journey, I’ve met some people who, I just don’t understand why, think that I SHOULD design for them for free because they are friends. They don’t get the idea that ‘designing is my profession and I’m also working for a living’. They could just simply drop you an email or give you a nice phone call and say:
‘Eh need your help to design a simple xxx for me.’
Yeah right, simple. They ALWAYS stress that all they need is simple stuff. But what is simple? Perhaps just a name and your business on your business card? Then perhaps you can do it with your word processing application, duh.
Seriously, I don’t mind helping a friend here and there, and I’m glad that I could, but hey, I’m not opening a business for charity. With my little business in progress I already have so many things piling up waiting for an independent aritist like me to finish – mind you, the tasks are just like a proper company: documentation, marketing, promotions, communication, customer service, even working like an office boy sending packaging to the post office! And yet, they still think I should fork out my time to work out concepts and ideas, and work in front of the computer for hours for them – for FREE! Oh and the work seems never-ending…
Perhaps just a little bit of consideration for freelancers like me, please?
