Someone is Sick, and it’s not Me.

Instagram Photo

Several weeks ago, I started noticing some thinned hair on Xiao Bi’s forefeet. She wasn’t chewing or scratching, so I thought it was just a temporary thing. It’s also because just two weeks before that, I had to buy a pack of dog kibbles from a brand that I usually don’t for them, as the regular ones were out of stock. I only give them kibbles as morning snacks, not even breakfast, so I thought it shouldn’t be a problem since it’s going to be temporary until our regular brand is back in stock. We eat plenty of junk food ourselves too, right?

I was so wrong.

She only had it for like, 2 weeks, and the hair was thinning. I quickly changed the kibbles, made a complaint with the company because at that time, I also saw worms at the bottom of the pack (!) – and by the way, the salesperson still hasn’t got back to me despite stating during my second phone call that he lost my number after my first phone call. Two weeks later, she started scratching. And chewing. So we started to treat her. And then two weeks later, Coco also started scratching. So, OMG.

And then we realised it’s probably mange from Scooby the dog, the community stray at my late grandma’s that I had been treating for months (I’ll have another post dedicated to this legendary dog later). No he wasn’t staying with us, and I was very careful to clean myself when I’m done with Scooby. But who knows? That poor quality kibbles must have triggered something in Xiao Bi’s system (she used to have some skin problem when she was a puppy) and then one thing lead to another, now I have two dogs who scratch and scratch and scratch…

So as you can imagine, I was horrified. I don’t like the idea of using drugs because it will just go and come. So I went back to my pet care bible, Dr. Pitcairn’s New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, and then I decided to fast both of them, together with some lemon rinse.

Today is the second day of their liquid fast and both are doing great, hopping around like kangaroos. Xiao Bi has been happily drinking her broth and juice, but not Coco. That crazy mutt who loves to eat everything has refused to touch her broth twice since we started the liquid fast.

As expected I’m constantly worrying if they’ll be OK with the fast, and I’m checking them more regularly. So of course, Wah said I’m crazy.

One more day to go before we start including vegetables and yoghurt into the diet for 2 days, and then oatmeal for 2 days, and then tofu and eggs for another 2 days, and finally back to their regular meals. Will I survive? :D

For Rain…

… and others who might be interested. Here is the recipe that I used to bake those dog kibbles. :)

Ingredients

  • A – 6 cups flour (4 cups wheat flour and 2 cups all-purpose flour)
  • B – 1 cup powdered milk
  • C – 1 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • D – 1 cup wheat germ
  • E – 1/2 cup brewers yeast
  • F – 1 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt (I used sea salt)
  • G – 1 large egg
  • H – 1 cup canned pumpkin (I had to omit this as I wanted to make some but didn’t have pumpkin with me)
  • I – 4 tablespoon safflower oil (I just used sunflower oil)
  • J – 3 cups cooked, ground meat
  • K – 2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Combine A – F.
  2. Stir together G, H, and I, and then mix well with No. 1.
  3. Work in J. Make sure it disperse well.
  4. Add K.
  5. Spread the mixture into about 1/2-inch thick on greased cookie sheet. Cut into small checkerboard pattern.
  6. Bake until uniformly golden brown, approximately 50 minutes. Note: The original recipe didn’t provide temperature so I used about 180 degrees Celsius.
  7. Remove from oven, and let it cool for 10 minutes. Break the squares apart, stir them around and return them to the oven.
  8. Turn off the oven. Leave the kibbles in it and stir occasionally.

Hopefully yours turn out better than mine, Rain! :)

Homemade Dog Kibbles.

Been trying to whip up some homemade kibbles for the dogs since… a month ago. They normally have half a cup of those higher quality commercial kibbles each for breakfast. I’ve been wanting to make some healthier ones to replace that. This is the second attempt but I still can’t get it crunchy enough. It’s more like soft cookies – though the dogs still love them. By the way this is one of the many reasons I love my dogs. They don’t complain about my cooking.

Someone Up There is Really Listening!

Two things came as surprises today. One is regarding a blog post elsewhere, another is this. Both are things that I’ve been thinking in my mind for quite a while – and kinda bothering me, as a matter of fact.

I’ve been wanting to get a proper canister for the dogs’ biscuits for quite a while. They now have this for breakfast as I really couldn’t get myself up to make them some – I mean, come on, I can’t even make breakfast for myself! So I figured I’ll just get them some biscuits with acceptable quality – no animal by-products, until I can cope with cooking for them in the morning again. The packaging of the last pack that I’ve got for them was kinda ‘chewed-off’ by a new mouse-tenant at home so I’ve been thinking to get an ugly plastic canister to store the biscuits. When we were at IKEA two weeks ago, Wah saw this very nice metal canister and was saying that I should get one. BOY THEY COST LIKE RM50 or RM60! He must be crazy.

Anyway, as I was planning for a trip to the supermarket to get the plastic one today, I got a mild flu and thought oh well, I’ll just get a pack of dog biscuits at a nearby pet store first and get the canister tomorrow. After chit-chatting with the store owner about changing to another dog biscuits at the pet store, I finally decided that I’ll take the same one, and that’s when the owner told me that my usual pack of dog biscuits comes with a FREE CANISTER! And when I was about to jump, the partner took out the canister and IT’S METAL! And IT’S SO CUTE! And IT WAS THE LAST ONE IN THE STORE!

Can you imagine that I was about to touch the ceiling at this moment?

So thank you, to whoever who has been listening up there. Now I wonder if I keep thinking that I’ll strike lottery will I get it as well? *chk chk chk human greed*

Baking for The Dogs: Second Attempt.

The dough was nicer than the first attempt and certainly easier to cut with the cookie cutter. The colour is actually golden brown, not dark brown as shown in the photo. Close to perfect except I think they are slightly harder than I expected – well I’m not too sure how ‘hard’ they are supposed to be, and of course the flour at the sides which I added for easier cutting. Should have used cooking oil instead… that’s me when it comes to baking or cooking – just grab anything close to me. :P

Still a hit among the dogs though. They can do just about ANYTHING for a piece of this. :)
