How Do You Define Back-Stabbing?

Something happened at the work place recently and I started to wonder, how does one define ‘back-stabbing’?

One fine weekend, when one of my colleagues, C, was left with some other people’s job, me and another colleague A, were also in the office doing our work. When me and A were waiting for C to finish stock arrangements to leave, several customers walked in to inquire and do some purchasing. As the place was supposed to be closed on weekend, we didn’t have other colleagues to take care of the customers. So C had to put his rushing work aside and attended the customers.

After all customers left, C returned to his work, hoping to complete the about-to-complete-work ASAP and leave the place. At this time, a colleague taking care of account, Y, called. Me and A were chatting beside to wait for C.

Immediately after C hung up the phone, he stood up and said:

“Wahlau! I told her to double check on her side last week, she didn’t wanna do it. Now only call me and said yeah the slip is at her place!”

Me and A looked at C, not knowing what happened. C then told us about the story behind. Apparently Y, being the one taking care of the account, couldn’t find some banking slips (or something, I could be wrong as I didn’t really hear it properly) last week and said C didn’t pass it to her. C on the other hand was very sure and insisted that she checked on her records but she refused to. It turned out C was right.

Y has been kinda well-known with this kinda issue. Probably being the only person taking care of the account is not easy at all. During a very recent case, I waited for her to claim something that I had to fork out my own money to pay for the company first, and it took her about five times to count and recount the less than 20 pieces of RM5 notes. Not to mention the time spent waiting for the claim and not being allowed to leave.

I started sharing with A and C on my experiences with Y. Some time in the beginning of last year she came to me with an invoice, and asked if I knew this customer had made the payment. I looked at the date, and it was at least 2-3 months ago. And the best part is, it was at another outlet which I wasn’t in charge and wasn’t working at. -.- DARL told her that she should ask the person-in-charge instead of asking me, and she claimed that because the issuer was me, and although the invoice was sent to that outlet and payment was supposed to be made there, the person-in-charge was always busy so she didn’t wanna bother them. I wonder what good answer will she get by asking someone who had no idea on the issue?

When we were half way chit-chatting, C received a call from Y again. Immediately after he hung up his phone, he did a sign of ‘shh…‘ to all of us. He said Y claimed that she could hear what we were talking. He wondered around and couldn’t find out the reason. So we left the place with a big question mark.

The next morning Y directed an email to C and claimed that she did it out of good will to call C and informed him about the missing stuffs, and C didn’t appreciate it and started to talk bad things behind her between the 3 of us. I thought back. Personally I don’t think we talked bad things. Those things that we shared were real experiences. The most we added-on was our personal feelings. Is sharing real experiences behind her also considered talking bad? How about those concerned-conversations (which she never knew) we had behind her when she was not well?

I wonder if it’s a good thing to listen to others’ conversations without permission then.
